Best Sci-Fi Movies of 2026 (So Far)

Science fiction rarely has a bad year, but 2026 has been something special. Between big-budget spectacle and smaller, stranger stories, here's what's actually worth watching so far.
Project Hail Mary tops most lists for good reason. A lone astronaut wakes up with no memory of his mission, only to discover Earth's sun is dying — and that he's not alone out there. It balances heart and hard science in a way few films manage, anchored by a performance that carries the whole thing.
War Machine went the opposite direction entirely: a loud, unapologetic mashup of giant-robot action and survival horror, following a squad of soldiers up against a nearly unstoppable alien war machine. It knows exactly what kind of movie it wants to be, and it delivers.
For something quieter, Iron Lung offers a claustrophobic descent into isolation and dread aboard a submarine navigating a sea few have survived. It's tense in a way that lingers.
And then there's the genre-bending stuff — films that use sci-fi ideas to talk about identity, grief, and what it means to be human, wrapped in body-horror or multiverse premises that hit harder than the marketing suggests.
The back half of the year still has heavyweights coming, including another trip to Arrakis. But if the first six months are any indication, 2026 is shaping up to be one of the strongest years for the genre in a long time.
